I Learned To Cook

To say that I love to cook is a vast understatement.

But you’ll have to take my word for it. Spending time in the kitchen makes me so happy.

I haven’t always loved to cook. No, but my love of cooking grew over time. My mom and both my grandmothers taught me the basics. But it wasn’t until I got married and got to spend time in the kitchen with John’s mom, Nancy, that my interest really grew. Nancy is a fantastic cook. John would tell me that she was always trying new recipes when he was growing up. So he learned to enjoy a wide variety of flavors and foods. I wanted that for our children, and I was determined to make it happen.

Nancy was born and raised in Wisconsin. When she got married and moved to New Orleans, she had about as much culinary experience as I did when I got married. Since I grew up in the “land of the bland” (Minnesota), I was accustomed to salt and pepper to season food. She and I had much in common.

What a delightful surprise to learn how many delicious flavors are available if you know how to put the right seasonings and ingredients together!

So, if you’re already a great cook, I’m not sure how much you’ll glean from what I’ve learned. If you’re a novice at cooking and really want to improve, hang in here with me, and I just might have a trick or two up my sleeve to allow you to begin to learn and love to cook.

Cooking at home has become a dying art. But I think that eating together with family or friends stands monumentally important. Eating the evening meal together remains a high priority in our home, with great bonding happening around the dinner table: a lot of news is shared, problems solved, and laughter enjoyed.

So I’m going to give it a try … and share with you what I’ve learned during my 29 years of spending time in the kitchen. I hope to share recipes, how-to’s, and pictures, too, of course.

I’m always interested in learning something new myself. Please feel free to leave a comment if you have something you’d like to share. Or, if you have a cooking-related question or comment, I’ll do my best to respond promptly.

Yea! Writing about how to make yummy food is going to be fun.

I hope you will think so, too.
